OTR in the LA Times

May 23rd, 2007 | By Jared Blank

The OTR got a nice mention in the LA Times over the weekend as I chatted about Farecast…
Speaking of which, the Wall St. Journal talks up a new website called Yapta.com that will alert you to when a fare you’ve purchased has dropped.  The article points out that several airlines (including JetBlue, United, Alaska and [...]

Virgin America Approved for Service

May 22nd, 2007 | By Jared Blank

I’m guessing most of you have seen this already, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that Virgin America has been approved for service.  Look for a July/August launch of flights between San Francisco and New York.
More service is always great news for travelers, and the coach cabin of Virgin looks quite nice, with [...]

Consumers Prefer IRS to Airlines

May 16th, 2007 | By Jared Blank

Americans apparently prefer dealing with the IRS than with airlines, according to a study put out by the University of Michigan (my alma mater).  The UM’s American Customer Satisfaction Index found that airlines scored 2 points lower than the IRS in terms of customer satisfaction (hotels only scored a couple of points better than the [...]

Havana Hijack Attempt Foiled

May 4th, 2007 | By Jared Blank

Not sure why we haven’t heard much about this:
Two Cuban soldiers were arrested on Thursday after they attempted to hijack an airliner in Havana and fly it to the United States.  The two soldiers (who had actually deserted) took over a city bus and forced it to the airport, where they boarded a Cubana flight [...]

Indonesia’s Airlines Deemed Unsafe

Apr 17th, 2007 | By Jared Blank

Two bits of news about aviation in Indonesia:
–The United States has downgraded Indonesia’s airlines, saying that they do not meet international standards for safety.  The government tells travelers in Indonesia to use non-Indonesian airlines for their flights.
–In an unrelated note, a former head of Garuda, an Indonesian airline, was arrested in connection with the murder [...]

If you’re interested in the A380, I’ve uploaded a slideshow of photos of the interior of the aircraft here.  Great stuff from a United employee who was on the flight to Chicago.

United’s Dirty Plane

Mar 26th, 2007 | By Jared Blank

Several people have sent me this article from the Consumerist that has a bunch of photos from a United Airlines flight from Hawaii to Chicago.  The plane was never cleaned prior to the flight, and, as you can imagine, it’s a mess.  United has since sent them two $300 travel vouchers.  But it’s well worth [...]

European Union, UK and US Pass Open Skies Agreement…For the Most Part

Mar 23rd, 2007 | By Jared Blank

The European Union, UK and US passed an open skies agreement that would allow for greater airline access between the areas.  Airlines will be free to fly from any country in the EU to the United States (currently, for the most part, airlines can only fly from their home country to the US).  This is, [...]

Gore and Staff Skip Airport Security… For a Bit

Mar 2nd, 2007 | By Jared Blank

Former next-President-of-the-United States Al Gore and two staffers were permitted to skip passing through security at Nashville’s airport on Wednesday.  An American Airlines employee led Mr. Gore and his group past security, only to be seen by an airport official who (correctly) made them go through security.  Gore reportedly had no complaints about having to [...]

Airlines Hold Back Seats During Storms

Jan 23rd, 2007 | By Jared Blank

The WSJ (subscription required, sorry) has a good article today that finds several airlines will not re-book  travelers stranded by a storm in open seats, preferring to hold them back for sale.  Yes, you read that correctly.  United, Delta and Northwest all say that they will fly with empty first class seats even when travelers [...]
