Friday Roundup: Aeroflot; Park Hyatt Siem Reap; Fake Pilot, and More

– Aeroflot says that it gets no benefit from being in SkyTeam and wants out. They’re especially annoyed with Delta (said someone at Aeroflot, “There is no point in cooperating with them…”).

– For some reason a Qantas ground worker dressed up as a pilot and sat in the cockpit of an A380 during a flight from Sydney to Dubai.

– The Park Hyatt Siem Reap (near Angkor Wat in Cambodia) opens August 1st, and it’s only a Category 4 so you can grab a room there for just 15,000 points. I was there a dozen years ago before the hotel building boom and the idea that there’s a Park Hyatt there just seems funny to me.

– Singapore Airlines will begin serving schmancy Illy Monoarabica coffee in premium cabins.

– And finally, I’m an airline livery guy, and I do love the new Iraqi Airways colors here (sorry, they won’t let me embed…)

  1. Park Hyatt Siem Reap with free night certificate here I come. Just gotta figure out how to get there.
    .
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Aeroflot leave Sky Team.

  2. Travel changes fast in “developing” nations. I was just in Krakow, Poland: the tourist scene is unrecognizable from a dozen years ago!

I’ve also been to Siem Reap this year, but it was a first visit so I have nothing to compare it to. I was amazed by how prosperous this corner of Cambodia appeared to be. And, of course, surprised by the choice of luxury hotels. I know folks reading these blogs like to use their hotel points, but there are a lot of “unaffiliated” luxe hotels in Siem Reap that offer good facilities at cheap prices. I considered using my points at the Le Meridien, but decided I could do better with a deal at a locally-managed resort. Looking at the Tripadvisor reviews can help pick out the good properties.

  3. TripAdvisor is awesome. I might never redeem hotel points again if I can find great hotels and BNBs at great prices. Hotel points can only get you so far…
