Everyone Is Writing About….Starwood Amex Ups Its Bonus 5,000 Points to 30,000 Points

I’ve noticed some people (especially in the comments of other folks’ blogs) that people are going completely bananas for the new Starwood Amex offer — instead of 25,000 bonus points, you can get 30,000 bonus points when you spend $5,000 on the card in 6 months (application here). Same deal with the business version of the card. You’ll earn 10,000 points at signup and another 20,000 points after you hit the minimum spend. It’s just a 5,000 point increase, people – everyone needs to take a deep breath.

They do this roughly every year, though in the past they’ve only required $4,500 spend. I’ve had the SPG card for years, but I pretty much stopped using it entirely when I got my United Club card, which offers 1.5 miles per dollar on everything (I only still kept it because they offered me a credit that nearly covered the annual fee). Still, if you don’t have the United Club card it’s a great everyday card for everything except travel and restaurants if you have the Sapphire Preferred card.

Offer is good through September 4th. It appears you can churn the SPG card if you haven’t had one for two years.

UPDATE: Million Mile Secrets has a nice overview of how you can refer yourself or your friends for this card (and the increased bonus) and get 5000 Starpoints. (Or I’m happy to refer you instead of using the links above…)
