Wizzair Will Test Charging for Carry-On Bags (Just 1 Route…For Now)

Wizzair has studied Spirit Airlines, and it likes what it sees:

The Hungary-based lowfare carrier will test charging for carry-on bags beginning August first on flights from London-Luton to Katowice (Poland). The airline will charge 10 Euro (about $12.50) for bags passengers bring on the aircraft larger than a backpack (or so).

I do appreciate their spin on the new fee, as the headline on the press release reads, “WIZZ AIR IMPROVES BOARDING EXPERIENCE: NEW CABIN BAGGAGE POLICY TO IMPROVE ON-TIME PERFORMANCE”

That’s certainly one way to look at it.

This is interesting because European lowfare carriers have been pretty strict about hand luggage for quite some time now, and you don’t typically see passengers in Europe trying to stuff huge bags into overheads bins the way you do in the US.
