Lebanon-based Middle East Airlines has joined SkyTeam, making it the second Middle East-based airline to join the alliance (Saudia being the other).
This is primarily noteworthy because (as far as I know) MEA requires the lowest number of miles or flights to reach SkyTeam Elite Plus Status, which gets you lounge access anytime you fly a SkyTeam airline. Most SkyTeam members require 50,000 miles to earn Elite Plus; MEA requires only 40,000 miles or 30 segments (that segment threshold is a good option for people who fly lots of short-hauls). They require 20,000 miles or 15 segments for Silver Status, which gets you free checked bags and priority boarding.
That won’t help most people, but it is an option if, for example, you fly the Delta Shuttle quite a bit – it may be worth crediting those flights to MEA, since you’ll earn lounge access after 15 round trips.
(Side note: Vietnam Airlines gets you SkyTeam Elite status after just 15,000 miles…)
