Delta has dropped its JFK-Athens service beginning in October (and running through March 2013), joining United and US Airways in eliminating nonstop service to Greece. With those routes suspended for the season, Greece will have no nonstop service from the US this winter – I can’t recall the last time there was no nonstop service to Athens from the US. Athens used to have nonstop service from the airlines above, plus TWA, Olympic and Tower Air (back in the day, obviously). No longer.
Winter routes to secondary European cities (and even some primary European cities – I’m talking to you, Rome) are notoriously difficult to make work, and we’ve seen Delta cut back significantly on their European flights during the winter months. The Greek economic crisis isn’t making the route any easier for airlines to make profitable, either.
