Beware of the Avis $20 for $40 Groupon Deal…It’s Not Such a Deal

Groupon is running a deal to pay $20 for $40 with Avis. This may seem like an easy way to knock $20 off the price of your next 2-day Avis rental. But be careful – you need to use their discount code (AWD), which does not give you any more of a deal than other non-prepay AWDs out there.

Because I heart my readers, I wanted to check out how good a deal this really was. Looking at a 4-day rental I have coming up in Ft Lauderdale in March, the price with no AWD was $291. The price with the Groupon AWD was $271 (less another $20, making it $251). That’s not bad…but if you choose not to use their AWD you can use Costco’s AWD (A108326) and prepay the whole thing for $247. Or don’t prepay, and use the USAA Insurance AWD (A177204) and pay $251 — exactly what you would’ve paid with the Groupon.

Obviously, I haven’t tried this in every market, but a quick check shows similar results elsewhere. PLUS, you cannot combine the Groupon AWD with any other coupons — which you CAN do with other discount codes.
