New Starwood Amex Offer: 25,000 Bonus Points after $5,000 Spend

You’re hearing it here first (at least I think you are): Tomorrow morning Amex is announcing a revised offer for their fantastic Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card. The current offer is 10,000 points after first purchase, with another 15,000 points after $15,000 spend in 6 months. Tomorrow’s Today’s offer will be the same, but you only need to spend $5,000 in 6 months, putting the bonus in reach of far more people.

The SPG Amex is my day-to-day card because of the incredible flexibility of points transfers out of Starwood and into various airlines (plus the 5,000 mile bonus for 20,000 point transfers).

Annual fee is $65, though it’s waived the first year.

This isn’t quite as good as their offer from the summer where you could earn 30,000 points after $4,500 in spend, but it’s close.

Apply here for the personal Starwood Amex. (Remember to log out of your Amex account before clicking that link or the offer will not be displayed.)

  1. would you get the bonus if you current or in the past have an Starwood Ameican Express card?

  2. Generally you have to wait 2 years before churning Amex cards. If others have heard differently, I’d love to hear about it.

  3. My wife applied for the “15,000 miles for $15000 spent” promotion 2 months ago. Do you think they’d change it to this new promotion over the phone? If so, do you know what the promo code is?
    Thanks!

    • Historically, Amex has matched the higher bonus, so she should be able to get it. The promo isn’t live until tomorrow morning, but I’ll update it here, along with the promo code. I’ll also shoot you an email once I have it. The offers usually go live around 9 or 10 am.

      • Quick update: the T&Cs say it’s for first-time cardholders only, so YMMV whether they’ll give the bonus points to your wife. Certainly worth asking. There isn’t a promo code – I would Secure Message Amex and tell them that you see the offer has been updated to 25k miles and see if they’ll match that. Can’t hurt to ask.

        • As expected, Amex turned us down. Received this answer from our “Secure Message” request:

This promotion is for solicited Cardmembers only. If you were solicited, the points will automatically be issued on completing the terms of the offer.

We are unable to enroll your account for the offer or issue the points if it was not solicited.

Our records do not show your account associated with this offer.

          • I would call them directly and say that this isn’t a targeted offer — it’s their primary offer now. (be nice about it). Then ask if they’ll match. But I think a phone call is your best route here.

  4. I signed up for a card under this promotion, but they will not honor the 15,000 point spending bonus.
