Continental Airlines announced nonstop service from Houston to Lagos, Nigeria, beginning in November, 2011 (yes, that’s a year and a half from now). The route, which will likely be filled with oil executives, will be served with one of their brand spanking new 787s. This follows on the announcement that they will be serving Auckland, New Zealand, nonstop from Houston. Continental announced service from Newark to Lagos several years ago, but pulled out due to the operational challenges of flying to Nigeria.
Please note that these announcements, while fantastic if they come to fruition, have at least as much to do with trying to show the benefits of the merger with United as anything else. We should expect to see new route announcements from the airline over the coming months, always with service to cities that are currently not being served by the combined carrier.
