Southwest to Launch Minneapolis Service (But Just to Chicago)

Oct 2nd, 2008 | By Jared Blank

If you live in Minneapolis (and chances are you don’t) you’ve probably wondered at some point why Southwest doesn’t fly there (if I remember correctly, they blamed the winter weather).  Well, wonder no longer:  the airline announced it will start a small (or very small) operation there in March.  Flights (at least for now) will only be to Chicago, but at least it’s a start.

  1. Only Midway has been announced. They have six months to figure out what other cities they want to serve and how to beat NW into submission there. Plus, connecting in to MDW allows for one-stop connections to a LOT of cities in the Southwest route network.

I expect Delta to use this as an opportunity to draw down service at the MSP hub, depending on just how aggressive the Southwest attack is.
