American Loses Body (Guatemala, Guayaquil, What’s the Difference?)

Sep 10th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

A New York man is not particularly happy with American Airlines after the airline apparently shipped the body of his recently deceased wife to Guatemala City. His anger stems from the fact that he sent the body to Guayaquil, Ecuador.  Oops.  The husband is suing the airline.

Bald? Air New Zealand Wants to Tattoo Your Head

Sep 10th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

Air New Zealand is looking for a few bald men…to tattoo their head with an advertisement about a new check-in system.  The airline is looking to hire 70 people to get their heads tattooed with info about the system and then stand in lines at the airport.  For this, you’ll receive about $770.  I’m sure [...]

Sep 10th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

Abdur-Rahim Jackson, a member of the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe, was forced by Israeli airport security officers to dance for them or be denied entry into the country.  When Jackson arrived at the airport, security pulled him aside for further questionning.  When he said that he was a dancer, security said, “If you are a [...]

Why Did the Stock Market Think United Filed for Bankruptcy?

Sep 9th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

You may have noticed that United’s stock dropped from $12 to $3 briefly yesterday after an erroneous report that it filed for bankruptcy.  If you dumped your stock at $3, you’re out of luck - NASDAQ says that it won’t cancel trades based on faulty info.  Oops.
So, how did this happen?  Nobody’s quite sure.  For [...]

JetBlue Auctions Off Flights on eBay

Sep 8th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

JetBlue has taken a clever marketing approach during the slower fall travel season and is offering off some flights and packages on eBay (one example is here).  One quick caveat:  the bids you make do NOT include a number of additional taxes, fees and whatnot that are often built into the total price of the [...]

JetBlue Flight to Diverted after Fight Breaks Out

Sep 8th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

I flew to Vegas on JetBlue last night and unfortunately nothing like this happened:  a fight broke out on a JetBlue flight from Boston to Ft Lauderdale after one of the passengers was smoking in the bathrooms (this is generally frowned upon - well, both the smoking and the fighting).  Three people, all related to [...]

Continental Announces OnePass Changes: Guess What, You Won’t Like Them (Unless You Like Paying to Check Your First Bag)

Sep 5th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

Continental became just another airline today when they announced that non-Elite members will be paying $15 to check their first bag.  Don’t worry, Elite members, you’ll also be pissed off when you hear that they’re eliminating the 500-mile minimum and have reduced Platinum mileage bonus from 125% to 100%, plus they’re lowering the Silver bonus [...]

Beware of Losing Your Ticketed Award Seats Due to Schedule Cuts

Sep 5th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

There’s an old journalism line about how if something happens 3 times, it must be a trend (except in the NY Times Sunday Styles section, where if something happens once it’s a trend…but that’s for another blog…)  So here’s a trend:
In the past week I’ve heard of 3 people who have booked and ticketed [...]

Snake on a Plane…No Really, There Was a Snake on a Plane

Sep 4th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

Cleaning crew going through an Air India plane in Mumbai discovered a snake coiled up under a seat.  When they tried to catch the reptile, it slithered away into an airvent where, disturbingly, it was never found.  If you find yourself on an Air India A319, I’d keep your feet off the ground.

If You’re Flying Qantas, You May Want to Turn Off That Laptop When You’re Told

Sep 4th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

An Australian businessman was taken into federal custody in Sydney after he had refused the crew’s request to turn off his laptop during landing.  Federal police escorted the jackass off the plane upon arrival in Sydney and questioned him before releasing him without charge.  I’m sure that spreadsheet he was working on was very important.  [...]
