Southwest and WestJet Enter Into Codeshare Agreement

Jul 8th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

You can stop wondering whether Southwest will fly to Canada (ok, you probably weren’t wondering that):  The airline announced an agreement with Canadian low-cost juggernaut WestJet to codeshare on cross-border flights beginning in late 2009 (remember when you read about this later today - this won’t start for another year and a half).  This will [...]

Yes, Your Flights into LaGuardia Are Usually Late

Jul 8th, 2008 | By Jared Blank

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting piece about flight delays and the conclusion is that this summer is as bad as last summer (for the most part).  The most interesting stat?  If it feels like you’re delayed every time you fly into or out of New York, you’re half right:  Flights into Newark and [...]

(from the Tripmela blog):
2 nights ago heavy rains apparently drove all manner of bird and beast onto the runway at Ahmedabad’s airport in India, causing delays after aircraft hit 12 birds and a dog. An Emirates flight on the way to Dubai hit a dog while taking off, though it continued its takeoff roll [...]

FlyYeti, Nepal’s Only Lowfare Carrier, Will Shut Down

Jul 2nd, 2008 | By Jared Blank

FlyYeti, an Air Arabia-run airline in Nepal, will shut down in mid-July after less than a year in business.  Incredibly, neither fuel prices nor Southwest Airlines were to blame - the unstable government has made leasing aircraft basically impossible.  Operations may resume some time in the future, but don’t hold your breath.

Why Do Airlines Keep the Assorted Fees When You Cancel a Ticket?

Jul 1st, 2008 | By Jared Blank

The Wall Street Journal answers a question my father has asked me for years:  When you cancel a nonrefundable ticket, why do airlines get to keep the roughly 16% of the fare that was actually taxes and fees paid to airports, the government, etc?
Answer:  Because that’s how the laws are written.  International airlines will refund [...]
