Northwest Cancels 1,000 Flights This Week

In what is shaping up to be the worst flying summer in history, Northwest has canceled about 1,000 flights this week due to a number of factors, not least of which is some sort of labor action by pilots who are upset with management.  Bad weather hasn’t helped either, as a bunch of airlines have canceled flights in the Northeast, but Northwest has really topped them all.  The Detroit Free Press has a little Q&A about what to do if you’re flying Northwest (short version: you’re screwed).

  1. On Tuesday, I was trying hard to decide whether to book my flight out of Dulles on Thursday on Airtran and wait a bit in the airport, or just take the milk run through Detroit and Memphis on Northwest. I had a good feeling that there would be a delay if I booked Airtran, but I put my cards on them and ended up having a good chat with a few people I met in airport. And yes, delayed it was (partly due to weather). I did not get home until 1:30am last night. But, now I am not so miffed because I may not have gotten home had I taken Northwest. Thanks for cheering me up. ^^

  2. glad i could help

  3. Do you think this trend will continue as the summer goes on? I booked Northwest tickets for mid-August.

  4. Yes, it will continue. Northwest is canceling a bunch of its flights this summer, but if you’re flying in mid-August, you’ll know well in advance if you’ve been affected. Overall, though, it’s still just a small percentage of their total flights.
