Interesting New Concept for Airline Seats

(Thanks to reader Simon for this heads up:)

An aircraft interior design firm has introduced a new seating layout that could change the way we fly (see here for photos).  Basically, the middle seats in coach all face backwards.  The way it’s set up allows for wider seats, which is a good thing.  Don’t expect to see it any time soon, but it’s good to know people are thinking about ways to make it more comfortable in the back.

  1. I don’t know about comfort, it looks like you just get packed in even more tightly than currently. Great for footsie though, maybe.

I recall reading somewhere that seats facing backward are MUCH safer in the event of a crash (hence flight attendant jumpseats face that way) but it’s conventional wisdom that no passenger would ever consent to flying that way.

  2. But for years passengers did sit that way in the front row on Southwest.

  3. So how would this work for a couple flying together, they have to sit opposite of each other, hmmmm doesn’t sound like the best of ways to start that romantic getaway. Lemme guess, for a premium you can get two seats facing forward together. Must fall somewhere between steerage and economy plus…..
