Retired Police Officers Caught in Bump Scheme

Jun 6th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Two retired Philadelphia cops were caught in a rather brilliant scheme where they would hang out at the airport and buy fully refundable tickets on sold out flights.  They would then try to get bumped off the flight (and earn a free flight voucher).  If they weren’t bumped, they just got their money refunded.  I actually heard about a similar scheme that a friend of our family did with People Express 25 years ago (People Express actually collected your money on the plane, so you could make a reservation and try to get bumped without actually having to buy a ticket).  Anyway, while their scheme wasn’t illegal, US Airways wasn’t happy about it.  And neither was the police department, which is investigating whether the officers did this on company time.
