JetBlue’s Solution for Delayed Flights

Feb 9th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

JetBlue is considering revising parts of its operations after having the worst ontime record for US airlines in December.  The carrier blames much of the tardiness on the congestion at JFK, which it hopes to circumvent by turning aircraft around faster.  But they also are looking at adding 10-15 minutes to the arrival times of [...]

United’s Frequent Flyer Bonanza in Denver

Feb 8th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

United Airlines is fighting back against Southwest’s entry into Denver using the only real weapon they have: frequent flyer miles.  The deal they’re offering is kinda detailed, but in short, if you fly 2 round trips to or from Denver in 2006, you get 4000 bonus miles or a $100 certificate for a Hyatt stay.  [...]

OTR in the NY Times

Feb 7th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

The humble OTR got a nice plug in Joe Sharkey’s column in today’s NY Times about travel blogs.
If you’re landed on this page after reading the Times, I apologize for making you read about the column you just came from.  A bit circular, I know.  The good (?) stuff is below…

EOS and MAXjet: An Update

Feb 7th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

You may be wondering how MAXjet and EOS are doing.  You may first be wondering what they are (in which case you probably don’t care how they’re doing).  The new carriers, flying all business class seating across the Atlantic, have both been offering fare sales regularly.  So, in an OTR first, I’ve done a bit [...]

Lebanon Publishes Airline Blacklist

Feb 7th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

tJust as several European countries have done recently, Lebanon has published a blacklist of airlines that are now forbidden to fly to the country.  As I’ve mentioned here before, just because you haven’t heard of an airline doesn’t mean that it’s not safe.  However, in this case, I’d say that if you haven’t flown these [...]

It looks like Vrigin America is getting closer to launch.  The fledgling carrier announced that it has hired ex-American Airlines CEO Donald Carty to be its Chairman.  Several articles have suggested that Carty’s connections in Washington will be helpful as the airline seeks to wave off concerns about its level of foreign ownership.
You may (or [...]

Airplane fans take note:  The super-jumbo A380 will make its first trip to North America today—right in your backyard!  As long as your backyard is in Iqaluit, Nunavut, in northern Canada.  The aircraft will undergo cold weather testing in temperatures as low as 40 degrees below zero.

Take a Helicopter from New York City to JFK Airport

Feb 6th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

The cost of traveling to and around New York City is not exactly logical:  a bus to Boston can cost $10, a cab to Newark will cost you about $60, which is the same as a one-way flight to Fort Lauderdale.  So perhaps I shouldn’t find it wildly expensive that a new service is charging [...]

Feb 6th, 2006 | By Jared Blank

Saudi Arabia will get its first low cost carrier when Sama launches later this year with flights between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.  If you live someplace like Cincinnati where you pay through the roof for many flights, you may be wondering why Dammam, Saudi Arabia, can attract low fares but your flight to Des Moines [...]
