Song announced that it will begin nonstop flights from Boston to LAX and SFO as well as the only nonstop from Hartford to LAX. This is interesting for two reasons: America West had tried unsuccessfully to introduce nonstop transcon flights from Boston and had to retreat. Secondly, we’re seeing Delta trying to shift more business routes over to Song, a move that runs counter to the original strategy of offloading low-yield flights to the Song unit. We’re also seeing diverging strategies from United and Delta, with United offering super-premium service on transcon routes, while Song is offering value-for-money. As I like to mention here every six weeks or so, except for union restrictions, is there any reason why Delta’s mainline product exists on domestic flights?
