Continued Bad News for United’s Employees

May 12th, 2005 | By Jared Blank

United announced a $1.1 billion loss last quarter and will ask a bankruptcy court to impose additional pay cuts on its mechanics and machinists.  The bad news for passengers is that those unions have authorized a strike should pay cuts be implemented.  I go back to my original recommendation for people with United frequent flyer miles:  book a ticket on a partner airline.

Speaking of which, in case you were wondering whether it’s impossible to make money in the airline industry, United partner Singapore Airlines posted a profit of more than $800 million last year.
