United Terminates Pension Plans

May 11th, 2005 | By Jared Blank

I haven’t written much (if anything) about the pension plan situation because a) I don’t find it that interesting and, more importantly, b) I don’t really understand pensions.  In any case, United was terminate to kill its pension plan as a means of pulling the carrier out of bankruptcy.  The US government will now take over the plans, though retirees and current employees will see their benefits slashed.  Keep that in mind the next time United is cutting fares and remember that that $69 flight to Denver cost some retired flight attendant a few thousand bucks a year.
