The Wall St. Journal is reporting that the America West & US Airways merger talks are moving along quickly, with an announcement possible ahead of America West’s May 17th annual meeting. New developments include a combined airline taking US Airways’ name, and the new carrier adding flights to Hawaii. In addition, America West CEO Doug Parker would take on the CEO role. The carriers are still looking for financing for the deal, though that doesn’t seem to be a problem in the airline world. As pointed out here before, airline mergers historically have failed (though not all), and require a master of integration to jam together two workforces whose livelihoods depend upon seniority.
