American Airlines significantly cut fares and restrictions on flights out of its Miami hub. Top walkup fares were cut as much as 85%, from insane levels to quite reasonable levels. In addition, Saturday night stays were eliminated, round-trip requirements are gone, and change fees were lowered from $100 to $50. Now, AA is touting this as a simplification of the fare structure. While this is true, what really happened is that AA had previously thought they could price the Miami market completely differently than flights from Fort Lauderdale (where JetBlue has a slew of flights). Turns out they were wrong, as passengers were making the 30 minute drive to save $900. Imagine that. AA will now price Miami as if it were Ft. Lauderdale. Good news for passengers.
