Russian Planes Hijacked

Aug 25th, 2004 | By Jared Blank

You’ve probably seen this elsewhere, but I thought I’d pass it along anyway:

Two Russian planes crashed yesterday within minutes of each other. The Russian government is now investigating whether the crashes are related to Sunday’s elections in Chechnya. One plane was a Sibir Airlines Tu-154 en route to the Black Sea resort of Sochi, while the other was a Volga-Aviaexpress Tu-134. The Tupolev aircraft hardly have the best safety record, but some initial reports say that the 2nd aircraft signaled that it was being hijacked (though other reports are now saying that there are no initial signs of terrorism.)
