Follow Up to Northwest Airlines Terror, Um, Scare

Jul 22nd, 2004 | By Jared Blank

As a follow up to the story from a couple of days ago about the Northwest Airlines flight that had Syrian musicians onboard, leading a passenger to write a long account of her fear of Syrian musicians. Patrick Smith, who writes the amazing “Ask the Pilot” column for Salon, has penned this response (you have to watch the commercial to read the whole thing). In short, he suggests that while profiling definitely has a place in the terrorism fight, perhaps the woman who wrote the account should stop being so racist. I’m with him.

In an unrelated note, I’m off on Friday so there’ll be no postings (unless I change my mind).

  1. When are you guys going to understand that you have made the word ‘racist’ a totally impotent word. It is unfortunate that the word formally used against the likes of a Klu Klux Klansman is now thrown around and used to describe Americans that see racial profiling as not only a rational tool, but an intelligent one to keep this country safe from another 9/11. You and Patrick Smith keep calling us everyday Americans ‘racists’, it has about the same effect as me calling you a ‘liberal’.
