Etihad Airways Makes a Splash

Jul 21st, 2004 | By Jared Blank

With the launch of Emirates Airlines flights to the US last month, that carrier has received quite a bit of attention here. I wanted to give you (yes, you) a heads up on another up-and-coming UAE-based carrier. Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways announced yesterday that they will purchase 36 Airbus aircraft, including 4 superjumbo A380s. The order will position them as a serious rival to incumbent Emirates Airways (yes, Emirates is based in nearby Dubai and not in Abu Dhabi, but they will be flying to similar locations in Europe and the Middle East). Though Etihad just launched in November, you’ll see lots more stories in the next year or two at the success of this upstart.
