United and Frequent Flyer Miles

Jul 7th, 2004 | By Jared Blank

In today’s installment of Everybody Asks Me:

What should I do with my United Mileage Plus Miles? Will I lose them if United goes under?

United is not going anywhere. Whether it puts off its emergence from bankruptcy for another year, or emerges from bankruptcy only to have to return to bankruptcy in two years, your miles are most likely fine. Frequent flyer programs are extremely lucrative for the airline and for its partners (United’s credit card partner Bank One has extended financing to the airline). Your biggest problem may be if the airline shrinks service from your city, a real possibility in Denver. But for international flights, Star Alliance partners can get you to nearly any city United currently flies internationally, so if they do cut back, you should be covered.
