Tehran’s Airport Closed by Army

May 10th, 2004 | By Jared Blank

In what I will admit is a confusing story, Iran’s army shut down its new international airport in Tehran on its first day of service on Saturday. Apparently the army was upset that a Turkish group was involved in building and running the airport. However, state-run Iran Air took over management the airport on Friday.

Two domestic airlines said that they would not fly into the airport if it was run by foreigners:

“We are not flying from an airport run by foreigners,” Ali Abedzadeh, director of state-owned Aseman Airline, was quoted as saying by Economic Hayat-e No daily on Wednesday.

I only mention this because Aseman Airlines is just an amazing name. You can see their website at http://www.iaa.ir/. I think an Aseman-Hooters merger would just be terrific.
