Don’t Mess With Singapore

Mar 8th, 2004 | By Jared Blank

If you remember a few years back, a high school kid in Singapore was going to be publicly flogged for chewing gum. Or some such somethingorother. Given that memory, it shouldn’t surprise you much to hear that Singapore’s government is deporting a Malaysian pilot who has lived in Singapore for 26 years for organizing a union action last year. The man was said to be the main reason Singapore Airlines’ pilots fired their union leaders last year after accepting wage cuts. According to a news report, “The leaders of Singapore’s government have said “confrontational industrial relations” are a threat in a country where the government, employers and unions traditionally co-operate closely and where industrial action is rare.” Yikes.
